District 211 schools along with other schools spanning the nation are coming together to compete in the Business Professionals of America, also known as the BPA. BPA is a nationally recognized activity in which students can compete in a variety of fields
offered that extends skills beyond high school.

“This club has an impact on students that are interested in gaining exposure to the business world,” One of the sponsors of BPA, Mrs. Phillips said. “Students are able to meet students from other schools and business professionals in what they enjoy in the area of business.”

BPA is a self-paced club where each competitor has to take on the responsibility of developing a complete and professional competition before they compete at the regional, state, and even the national level. There are five different categories of competition. There is finance, business administration, management information systems, digital communication and design, along with management, marketing and communication.

“When a student distinguishes their strengths, they choose a single event and either another individual or team event to compete in,” Mrs. Phillips explained. “In that moment, it is up to the students to expand their competition and meet with sponsors for advice and resolutions.”

A major program of Business Professionals of America is the Workplace Skills Assessment Program, also known as the WSAP. The WSAP arranges students to achieve and appraises business skills of the real world and problem-solving abilities in finance, management, IT and computer applications. The WSAP presents BPA’s program and encourages students to show their career capabilities at regional, state and national conferences in multiple competitive events.

“BPA, unlike other activities, offers an output for business-minded individuals, as well as time for other activities or sports to be prepared for in accordance,” Junior participant of BPA, Rafael Portillo said. “I participated in BPA my sophomore year and I overtook two different positions that explored business development and oratory persuasion in the essence of procedural settings.” Mrs. Phillips adds, “I would recommend this club to someone who has an interest in business and is looking
at developing their resume, interpersonal skills, and self-discipline skills,”  Mrs. Phillips, the current sponsor of BPA along with Ms. Passeri, encourages people to join BPA that are interested and want a career in business.

“Definitely, as a student, and future employee or employer, I believe that preparedness and networks are fundamental to one’s success. With BPA, not only are such ideals achieved, one can do them with their friends,” Rafael Portillo stresses.

He tells students who, in the near future, wants to get into a career of business and finance should take a chance and
join the BPA team. This way, the student will be able to see what strength and weaknesses they have in the field. Overall, BPA is wonderful program frequented by many at SHS.
