With her outstanding performances at the recent sectional and state tennis tournaments, Schaumburg High School junior Jhena Emnace has solidified her reputation as a top-tier first varsity singles player.
At the sectional tournament, Emnace showcased her skill and determination, ultimately securing a place at the state level. After receiving a bye in the first round, Emnace faced Wheaton North in the second round, winning in a dramatic match that featured a rollercoaster of scores: 6-0, 0-6, 6-1.
“I was actually very thrilled to play and was looking forward to a good match; my goal was just to have fun and enjoy it” stated Emnace.
The third round was crucial, as it determined her advancement to the state tournament. Emnace faced Glenbard North and won decisively, 6-2, 6-0.
“I just told myself that I wasn’t going to let that happen again and just lock in and believe in myself,” she reflected. Her ability to focus and regain confidence was key to her success.
However, the quarterfinals proved to be a more difficult challenge. Emnace encountered Katie Strilich from Conant, a highly skilled player, and lost 3-6, 0-6.
“This match was probably the most stressful match,” Emnace admitted, highlighting the pressure of high-stakes competition.
At the state tournament, Emnace faced tough opponents, including a challenging first round against Glenbrook North, which she lost 1-6, 4-6.
“I was pretty excited to play, but it was cold, and I was nervous since there were a lot of people there,” she shared, indicating how nerves can affect performance, especially in a big event like state.
Despite this setback, Emnace rebounded in her second round against New Lenox, winning 6-1, 6-4, even while battling plantar fasciitis.
“I was in so much pain from my feet, but I was also determined to win,” she said, demonstrating her resilience and commitment to the sport.
In her final match at state against Oswego, Emnace lost 2-6, 4-6 but remained proud of her efforts. “I honestly could have won this but just wasn’t locked in. I was pretty sad when I lost this match,” she reflected.
This season, Emnace has also benefited from working with new coach Seth, who has helped her refine her game and strategy. Looking ahead, she is focused on improving her skills for next season, eager to build on her experiences.
Jhena Emnace’s passion and determination on the court not only highlight her skill but also inspire fellow athletes and students within the Schaumburg community. For updates on her journey and the upcoming tennis season, fans can follow Schaumburg High School athletics.
