A group of enthusiastic sophomores launched a brand-new Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) club at SHS. This creative and collaborative role-playing game is giving students a chance to tap into their imagination, build teamwork skills, and develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
First created in 1974 by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy role-playing game where players create characters and embark on thrilling adventures. Whether battling fierce monsters, uncovering hidden treasures, or rescuing captives, the game encourages players to think on their feet, strategize, and collaborate to solve problems. While its popularity has fluctuated over the years, its core appeal remains the same: the joy of storytelling and the boundless creativity it fosters.
The SHS D&D club, spearheaded by Mr. Campbell and a dedicated group of sophomores, offers students a chance to dive into this epic world. “D&D Club is a great place to learn the game, get involved in campaigns, and explore different storytelling styles,” says Lucas Del Boccio, a sophomore and club member. “Both the club founders and some members host campaigns, so there’s always something new to experience. If you want to try being the Dungeon Master (DM), you’ll need to gather your own party!”
The club meets every Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, offering a manageable commitment for those looking to explore the game without a heavy time investment. According to Del Boccio, “D&D Club lets you take part in adventures shaped by the creativity of others, and it’s a really fun and special experience. It’s like a ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ book, but with endless possibilities—and you get to share the experience with friends, old and new.”
Dungeons & Dragons is known for its depth and customization, making it a unique experience every time. Players can create their own characters, choosing their race and class, and setting out on adventures that are limited only by their imaginations. The game offers immense freedom, allowing players to develop their characters, explore different worlds, and grow alongside their teammates. Plus, the game’s cooperative nature helps build teamwork and social connections, making it a perfect fit for a school club.
No prior experience is needed to join the club—just an open mind and a sense of adventure. The club’s welcoming atmosphere ensures that new players are supported, and experienced players can always find new challenges and opportunities for growth.
Dungeons & Dragons has a long and storied history, with many fun and surprising facts about its origins and impact. The first Monster Manual, released in 1977, introduced the “Black Pudding,” a dangerous amorphous slime that became one of the game’s most iconic creatures. D&D has also influenced video games, including Baldur’s Gate (1998), a role-playing game that uses the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons ruleset and is considered one of the best computer RPGs ever made.
Whether you’re a veteran player or someone who’s curious to try the game for the first time, the D&D club offers an exciting and welcoming community. Students will have the chance to expand their creativity, hone their problem-solving skills, and engage in collaborative storytelling in a fun and supportive environment.
So gather your friends, roll some dice, and embark on an unforgettable adventure with the SHS Dungeons & Dragons club!
