Schaumburg High School brought the “Lights Out” theme to life Friday night, dominating Vernon Hills with a 49-7 victory. The win improves Schaumburg’s record to 3-1 and kicked off homecoming weekend with a bang.
The excitement around the game was electric all week, with the student section really bringing the energy and noise. On the field, Schaumburg wasted no time making a statement. Each snap built momentum, and the players fed off the roaring crowd.
Coach Stilling claimed “special teams were special” with Ray Black running a kickoff return for 99 yards for a touchdown within the first ten seconds of play, giving the team an early and promising lead. Later on, Vince Heydecker ran for a 43 yard punt return, ending in a touchdown.
Offensively, Schaumburg was unstoppable. Matthias Zubcek, playing center for the first time, has been virtually flawless. The offensive line held strong all night, giving quarterback Ray Black and Vince Heydecker time and kept Vernon Hills’ defense guessing.

Defensively, Schaumburg was equally dominant. Amiryon Smith had another sack to add to his team leading season total of 4.5. His play prevented the Vernon Hills offense from gaining momentum. The defense limited big plays and kept pressure on the quarterback from start to finish.
Fortress members cheered for every touchdown, first down, and tackle. The student section has never been this excited. The crowd’s energy mirrored the “Lights Out” theme, making the stadium feel like a true homecoming celebration.
With the Homecoming victory, Schaumburg heads into conference with confidence and focus. Hoping to maintain their momentum and keep the energy alive. This week the Saxons play Hoffman at home, which is, arguably, one of the biggest games of the season. That matchup carries extra weight, as bragging rights and playoff positioning are both on the line.
“This week the team has been locked in on a different level.” “We have something to prove, and we’re going to prove it Friday night,” Smith said.
