Schaumburg High School’s National Honors Society organized a successful blood drive on Friday the 13th, collecting approximately 57 units of blood. The event, hosted in the gym, allowed students to sign up during their free periods, resulting in a strong turnout. Partnering with Vitalant, a blood donation organization, our school made a significant contribution.
Mrs. Lopez, in her effort to encourage more volunteers, stated, “This is more similar than different to our previous drives. Of course, we are always looking for more donors to save more lives!”
The act of donating blood holds various benefits. Beyond its charitable nature, it plays a vital role in public health. Contributions help save lives, maintain a stable blood supply, fuel medical advancements, and even provide participants with a free health screening. Hospitals depend on these donations for ready-to-use batches in surgeries, trauma care, cancer treatment, and addressing various medical conditions.
Additionally, donating blood has personal advantages. Many donation centers offer health screenings, providing insights into one’s health or the health of their blood. This act contributes to the community at a small personal cost and supports research leading to new treatments or technologies.
Grace Clavio, an SHS student, shared her motivation, stating, “I donated due to my past relations of family emergencies so I know how important it is to donate.”
The SHS blood drive was deemed a great success. While expressing gratitude to all participants, the school emphasizes the ongoing need for community involvement. Blood drives not only save lives but also strengthen the community. SHS looks forward to next year’s drive with anticipation.
