Schaumburg High School recently welcomed back one of its own, as 2004 graduate Bonnie Anderson returned to speak with current Culinary students about her journey in the culinary field.
Anderson, who completed all four years of the Culinary Arts program at SHS, shared how those early experiences helped shape her path. During her senior year, she earned a Rotary Club scholarship for culinary arts, along with a professional culinary toolkit, essential supplies for entering the hospitality industry.
After graduating, Anderson went on to study at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, where she is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts. Johnson & Wales University is nationally recognized for its hands-on culinary programs, industry connections, and emphasis on real-world experience, preparing students for diverse careers in the food industry.
Visiting during her spring break, she spoke candidly about her transition from high school to a nationally recognized culinary program. She discussed both the challenges and opportunities she has encountered, giving students a realistic look at what it takes to succeed in a professional kitchen.
Teachers noted how Anderson has taken full advantage of every opportunity available to her in college. She emphasized this in her talk, explaining how she uses her free time to explore passions beyond the classroom—participating in hands-on clinics and developing skills not always covered in her courses. Her message encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, explore opportunities beyond their hometown, and use college as a time to build connections and discover new interests.
During the visit, students asked thoughtful and engaging questions, creating a meaningful dialogue about culinary education and career paths. Anderson also brought a hands-on element by sharing a variety of beautifully crafted homemade items, including pastries, caramel, and focaccia. Her work not only showcased her growing expertise but also provided students with a tangible example of what they can aspire to achieve.
Students and staff alike found the visit both informative and inspirational. Anderson’s return served as a powerful reminder of how dedication, creativity, and initiative can open doors and how Schaumburg High School students can turn their passions into future careers.
