The Schaumburg High School girls swim and dive team wrapped up an impressive 2024 season marked by resilience, rising talent, and standout performances from a young and driven roster. With one of the youngest varsity groups in recent years, the team entered the fall determined to rebuild and prove themselves.
Led by captains Diana Bobiv, Veronica Mieczkowski, and Sanvi Patel, and coached by Coaches O’Grady, Griffin, Letzel, and Shea, the Saxons overcame significant losses to graduation and still achieved an extremely strong season. Their early meets showed steady growth, and by midseason, the team’s confidence and chemistry had become clear strengths.
Coach O’Grady praised the group’s commitment and determination throughout the fall. “The girls did an amazing job representing Schaumburg High School in the pool this year. The varsity squad lost a lot of seniors last year, but so many young girls stepped up to continue the success of the team. With a sectional squad of no seniors, they were still able to pick up 4th place at the sectional meet. This was a huge accomplishment for this young group of hardworking girls,”
One of the season’s biggest highlights came from junior captain Diana Bobiv who qualified for the IHSA State Championships in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Bobiv earned 14th place in the 100 fly, capturing a state medal and breaking the school record in the event. This accomplishment added an exciting milestone to a season already full of unexpected strengths, and it energized the entire program heading into postseason competition.
Bobiv reflected on the team’s determination despite losing last year’s seniors. “The team had a lot of courage after losing their seniors and worked hard to continue their success,” she said. Her words echoed the mindset shared throughout the program as younger swimmers learned to step into leadership roles. Many teammates pointed to her work ethic and positivity as major reasons the team stayed focused and motivated.
Beyond state-level accomplishments, the Saxons also celebrated a Fresh/Soph Conference Championship, several podium finishes at the varsity sectional meet, and consistent improvement across the lineup. Younger swimmers stepped into major roles, helping secure the team’s fourth-place sectional finish—an especially impressive feat for a squad without any seniors competing at the meet. These achievements showed that the team’s depth and talent run far beyond the top lanes. Week after week, the roster demonstrated that they were not rebuilding—they were rising.
For senior captain Sanvi Patel, the season was both competitive and deeply meaningful. “I feel that the team bond and grit this season was so much stronger. I’m so grateful for the close relationships I formed and how hard the team was able to push themselves… Overall, this season was a good note to end off on, and I’m so grateful for the memories made.”
Her reflection captured the emotional side of a season that blended performance with team culture. Sanvi Patel’s leadership helped create an environment where younger swimmers felt supported and confident.
With strong leadership returning next year and a roster filled with developing talent, the Saxons have set the stage for continued success. The foundation built this season suggests that the future of Schaumburg girls swimming and diving is bright. Coaches and athletes alike agree that this year was just the beginning of what the next few seasons can become.
