The Schaumburg High School Girls’ Wrestling Team capped its season with a dominant showing at the IHSA State Tournament, earning multiple medals and finishing second in the state duals to solidify its place among Illinois’ top programs.
Leading the way, Sharon Olorunfemi placed second in the state in the 135 lbs division, while Nadia Razzak took third at 190 lbs. Their finishes highlighted a strong postseason run for the Saxons.
Schaumburg qualified four wrestlers for the state tournament: Isabella Rivas, Maja Brzosko, Nadia Razzak, and Sharon Olorunfemi.
The team’s success began earlier in the postseason, where regional champions Isabella Rivas, Sharon Olorunfemi, Emily Fowler, and Nadia Razzak helped power the Saxons to another title. That depth across weight classes positioned Schaumburg for a strong sectional showing and ultimately carried through to its success on the state stage.
Razzak, a senior captain, also earned Mid-Suburban League Girls Wrestler of the Year honors. She credited the team’s preparation for its success.
“What led us to victory, I think, was the grueling practices our coach puts us through. He teaches us how to push the limits of our bodies, which makes us stronger wrestlers, giving us the ability to win bigger matches.”
Olorunfemi, a junior, emphasized the team’s mental approach and support system. “Our success not only comes from our physical training, but also the mental training our coaches do with us. It trains us to be able to calm our minds during heated moments and quickly reset during a tough match. Not only that, but I believe our environment has led us here.”
Earlier in the postseason, the Saxons advanced eight wrestlers through sectionals after winning their third straight regional title at Glenbard West, scoring 228.5 points to finish ahead of Conant.
Coach Bonilla recognizes that the team’s work ethic has defined its success.
“We work our girls like no other team in this state. Every fine tune and detail we have worked on this season really showed up,” Bonilla added.
