Hallways burst with color, rhythm, and excitement this October as Schaumburg High School kicked off its annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. From traditional dress to reggaeton beats, students across campus embraced the opportunity to honor the diverse cultures and traditions that shape the Hispanic community.
The event organized by Latinos Unidos, SHS’s student club dedicated to promoting inclusivity and cultural awareness, transformed the school into a showcase of music, art, and heritage. This year’s celebration featured themed Spirit Wednesdays, each designed to highlight a different facet of Hispanic identity.
The festivities began on October 1 with “Gruperos or Reggaetoneros,” where students sported either country-inspired or urban styles reflecting popular music genres across Latin America. The following week, on October 8, students showed their pride by wearing jerseys and gear representing their favorite Hispanic athletes or teams, bridging sports and culture. The final celebration on October 15 invited creativity as students dressed up as characters from the iconic Mexican game La Lotería, filling the halls with vibrant costumes.
“By having these spirit days, we hoped that more students would join us in celebrating our Latino heritage; and to spread the beauty of our culture, which makes us so proud, throughout the school.” Mrs Somarriba
Throughout the month, Latinos Unidos encouraged students of all backgrounds to participate, reinforcing the club’s commitment to inclusivity. Colorful hallway displays and themed decorations highlighted Latin American traditions and achievements, transforming education into celebration.
What began just a few years ago as a small group’s effort to amplify Latino voices has blossomed into one of Schaumburg High’s most anticipated cultural events. As the music fades and decorations come down, the message remains clear: Latinos Unidos continues to ensure every culture at SHS feels seen, valued, and celebrated.
