The 83rd Golden Globe Awards kicked off awards season on January 11, bringing together some of Hollywood’s biggest stars for a night full of surprises, laughs, and hints about what might happen at the Oscars. Comedian Nikki Glaser hosted again, mixing funny moments with powerful speeches that made the night really memorable and set the tone for the rest of the awards season.
This year’s Golden Globes highlighted a few films that really made an impact, both with critics and for the awards season ahead. One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was a big winner of the night, taking home Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, as well as Best Director and Best Screenplay. Teyana Taylor also won Best Supporting Actress for her role, showing just how much voters loved the film.
TV shows also had a big moment at this year’s Globes. Adolescence and The Studio were some of the biggest winners, and actors from these series were celebrated alongside the films.
One of the night’s biggest highlights happened in the TV categories when 16-year-old Owen Cooper made history. Cooper won Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series for his role as Jamie Miller in the Netflix drama Adolescence, becoming the youngest person ever to win that award and only the second-youngest male winner in Golden Globes history.
Timothée Chalamet won Best Actor — Musical or Comedy for his role in Marty Supreme, marking his first Globe win after four previous nominations and a major boost in his Oscar campaign.
His performance as the ambitious, high-energy table tennis player impressed critics for its mix of physicality and emotional depth. His win now positions him as one of the frontrunners for the Academy Awards.
Awards for screenplay and original score also stood out this year. Paul Thomas Anderson’s win for Best Screenplay highlighted the importance of sharp, compelling storytelling, while Sinners earned Best Original Score, emphasizing how music shapes a film’s emotional impact. Technical categories like these often foreshadow Oscar nominations, giving filmmakers recognition for the craft behind the camera.
Many winners also used the platform to advocate for social issues (protest against U.S. immigration policies, representation for Black women, and support for the trans community), highlight mentorship, or acknowledge the collaborative nature of filmmaking, adding depth to the night beyond just trophies.
With Oscar voting now underway and the Academy Awards coming up later this winter, the race is starting to take shape. One Battle After Another and Hamnet have gained a lot of attention after their Globe wins, putting them in strong contention for Best Picture. Strong performances, whether comedic, dramatic, or supporting, are also standing out to voters across the industry.
As the season continues with guild awards and critics’ picks, fans will be keeping an eye on whether the Golden Globe winners maintain their momentum or if new contenders emerge.
