Schaumburg High School’s choral program showcased its talent during the winter choral concert on December 9 in the school auditorium. The performance brought together students, families, and staff for an evening of music that highlighted the dedication and growth of the choir program.
Under the direction of Braulio Muro, the choir delivered a confident and expressive performance. The concert was accompanied by Bev Tipps, whose piano accompaniment added support to each piece. Their leadership helped create an engaging concert experience for the audience.
The concert also reflected the work of student intern Mya McCurdy, whose contributions supported the success of the event.
“As a student intern, I have a wide variety of responsibilities, ranging from teaching music to administrative tasks. Overall, I aid Mr. Muro in whatever he may need help with to keep class organized and running smoothly. At our winter concert, I was especially proud of the growth of the students I intern for, and witnessing their application of the lessons they had learned,” said Mya McCurdy, a senior at Schaumburg High School.
Mr. Muro was really proud of the piece “Tundra” by Ola Gjeilo, performed by the combined treble choirs. He said it was a demanding piece, and that his students put in a great deal of effort to bring it to life.
“Their performance was truly beautiful and really showcased their growth and dedication. I also want to highlight our combined performance of ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town.’ That piece brought out the holiday cheer and allowed all the students from different choirs to come together in a fun and joyful way,” said Mr. Muro.
Mr. Muro wanted to share that sense of winter joy, peace, and warmth with everyone. The directors included a diverse repertoire, from secular winter pieces like “Glow” by Eric Whitacre to traditional holiday songs from Christmas, Hanukkah, and more.
What makes the winter concert unique is how community-focused it is. After the concert, they invited everyone to gather in the showcase hallway for hot chocolate, a bake sale, and carolers at the entrance. It was a time when the whole community came together, so the audience left not just fulfilled by the music but by the entire experience.
Overall, the December 9 choral concert demonstrated the hard work, collaboration, and musical talent within Schaumburg High School’s choral program, making it a memorable night for all who attended.
The concert also served as an important milestone for the choir program as students prepare for upcoming festivals and performances later in the school year. Many singers expressed increased confidence and a deeper appreciation for ensemble work after the concert. Audience members showed strong support throughout the evening, reinforcing the choir program’s role as a valued and unifying part of the school community.
