JV and Varsity Competitive Cheer delivered an outstanding performance at the Dundee-Crown Invitational, with both teams earning first-place finishes. Competing against strong programs from across the region, the cheerleaders showcased sharp routines, synchronized stunts, and high energy that set them apart.
The double victory reflects the teams’ dedication and preparation, as well as the leadership of their coaches.
“Our athletes have really refined their skills to ensure they are competition ready. They have put in countless hours focusing on technique and accuracy, and it shows in how clean and confident their performances are!” remarked Mrs. Belcaster, the cheer coach.
The hand-to-hands have been especially exciting to watch. This skill is new to IHSA cheer this year, and the girls have embraced the challenge. Mrs. Belcaster explained that they’ve had a lot of fun performing it, and it has been a crowd “wow” factor since it’s such a difficult skill to execute.
“The biggest challenge of learning new skills is trusting that everyone will do their part and finding a connection so we can work together as one. The part of the routine I’m most proud of is the first stunt, my back handspring up, and the high-to-highs, because I’ve worked on them since summer and they make our stunt look flawless,” said Sofia Morabito, a senior at Schaumburg High School on the Varsity Team.
“My group has always made sure to fix stuff that does not go well and let each other know so we can fix it in another rep so it can be better and more successful. A quote that I say to myself is ‘be confident in everything you put out there on the mat and have no doubt,’ said Victoria Szczepanski, a junior on the Varsity Team.
The coaches also explained that they focus on over-preparing their athletes for every possible outcome. One of their biggest tools is team visualization exercises. They encourage them to mentally see themselves hitting the routine successfully before they step onto the mat.
“Schaumburg JV and Varsity taking home first-place trophies in their divisions was incredibly special. They were so proud representing their school and each other, and it was rewarding to watch them celebrate knowing all their hard work had paid off. They always want to hit their goals with passion and grit; it is my favorite part of coaching them,” said Mrs. Belcaster.
They also competed at Fremd High School for the MSL championship and won first place while celebrating the seniors for their senior night with new white uniforms.
“I’m extremely grateful to be a part of such a hardworking program. Every practice we work super hard but have so much fun. It makes our wins feel so deserved. I hope future SHS cheerleaders take in every moment, and enjoy the good days and the hard days,” said Jianna Kerimi, another senior on the Varsity Team.
