MC art students recently turned winter’s snowfall into inspiration through a creative photography and painting project now on display outside the attendance office.
Artists began by photographing scenes of freshly fallen snow around the school, focusing on light and texture. Using their photographs as references, students then created painted interpretations that reflect their personal artistic styles and perspectives.
The project encourages observation and artistic experimentation while celebrating the beauty of the winter season through student work.
Last year, the MC program hosted an arts showcase in the media center, and each year students also participate in the school’s Diversity Fair. Many students’ art portfolios are shared on ArtSonia, allowing their work to be viewed by the school community and beyond.
Students interested in spending time with MC students and participating in fun activities can join the Partners Club, which meets after school on Thursdays. School field trips take place about once a month, and students can also interact with MC students during their gym periods. Currently, MC students are working on choreography for Just Dance routines. Volunteers also assist with wheelchairs when needed and help students use communication or medical devices.
Every student volunteer is required to teach a class twice each semester. For example, one student modified the game Mafia and spent a day teaching everyone how to play it. These activities encourage creativity, leadership, and meaningful connections between students.
The MC class follows a schedule similar to other students, with classes every hour, including reading, writing, life skills, art, lunch, and P.E. Six nurses are available to support students with meals or respond to medical needs and emergencies. The program is supported by an occupational therapist, a speech and language pathologist, and itinerant specialists who provide services to students across classrooms.
At the end of each year, graduating seniors create Google Slides presentations about current MC students to introduce them to new volunteers. This helps future volunteers build connections and understand the students they will be working with.
Last year, former students returned for a Friendsgiving celebration during the holidays to reconnect with the MC students they had worked with before, strengthening the sense of community within the program.
Students looking to extend their involvement beyond school can also volunteer with community programs like GiGi’s Playhouse and TOPSoccer. GiGi’s Playhouse is a nonprofit organization that supports individuals with Down syndrome through educational, therapeutic, and social programs, giving volunteers the chance to build friendships and assist with activities that promote independence.
TOPSoccer is a community-based soccer program designed for athletes with disabilities, where volunteers help with practices, games, and encouragement, creating an inclusive and supportive environment. Through these opportunities, students can make a meaningful impact while gaining valuable experience working with diverse communities.
