On February 11, the Band-O-Rama concert brought together student musicians from across the community in a collaborative performance celebrating music education. This year’s event partnered with District 54, allowing younger band students the opportunity to perform alongside high school musicians and experience the excitement of a large ensemble concert.
The performance featured the Addams Junior High School 7th and 8th grade bands, as well as bands from Frost, Keller, and Lincoln Prairie Junior High Schools, performing alongside the SHS Wind Symphony. Together, the groups created a large ensemble that showcased the musical talent and dedication of students across multiple grade levels.
The evening included a variety of musical selections such as Highlights from the Star Wars Saga by John Williams, arranged by Paul Cook, Woodland Hills by Ed Huckeby, American Hymnsong Suite: Prelude on “Wondrous Love” by Dwayne S. Milburn, and Fireball! by Brian Beck. These pieces allowed students to demonstrate both technical skill and musical expression while performing as part of a large combined band.
This year’s concert was especially meaningful because two junior high band directors are retiring. During the event, they were recognized and featured in a performance with the SHS Wind Symphony, where they conducted the final two pieces of the concert. The moment highlighted the impact they have had on generations of student musicians and made the evening particularly memorable for performers and audience members alike.
Planning for the event began last spring. With four junior high bands participating this year for the first time, organizers had to adjust the setup on the gym floor to accommodate more than 400 musicians. Despite the large scale of the performance, students successfully came together as a unified ensemble.
Each school prepared its music separately, and the full combined groups only rehearsed together for a little over an hour per grade level before the performance. Even with the limited rehearsal time, students worked hard to listen, adjust, and blend their sound, creating a cohesive and powerful musical experience.
Beyond the music itself, the event emphasized connection and community. High school students acted as role models, helping younger musicians feel welcomed and inspired while demonstrating the dedication and teamwork required in band.
“I hope our District 54 students walk away inspired to keep making music at the high school level, knowing that they can be very successful across academics, activities, and athletics while also keep music as a core part of their studies,” said Mr. Inendino, one of the organizers and the Band Director.
